Laws and regulations

Do you want to know which rules you need to take into account or which legislative changes and new laws are important within the topic of food waste? The Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland will gladly help you further.

Nobody happily throws food away, but consumers need to be able to trust that their food is not harmful to their health. Businesses that make foodstuffs need to stick to the law for safety. These laws are found in the Warenwet. Foodstuffs as well as all products for consumers fall under this law.

The Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit’s independent risk assessment act regulates the responsibility of the NVWA in relation to the risk assessment and health protection of consumers.

The mention of shelf life data on foodstuffs is as of 13th December 2014 in accordance with the European Regulation 1169/2011 concerning the provision of food information to consumers. The regulation makes it compulsory for companies to put used-by dates on products to inform consumers. The date on products is in fact there to protect the consumer. You’ll find more information about this here.
